WASHINGTON — Continuing his oversight to root out waste, fraud and abuse in Medicaid, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, today sent letters to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the U.S. Government Accountability Office seeking information about state Medicaid funding schemes that may be costing federal taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars or more.
The letters to CMS Administrator Seema Verma and the Comptroller General Gene Dodaro follow an August hearing on Medicaid fraud before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. At that hearing, Comptroller General Dodaro testified to the “almost limitless” number of gimmicks states can use to artificially inflate the federal government’s contribution to their Medicaid programs.
“At a time of rising federal deficits and increased federal Medicaid spending, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) should closely scrutinize these schemes,” Sen. Johnson wrote to Administrator Verma.
