WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., issued the following statement Thursday in reaction to the President’s request that FBI Director Robert Mueller serve two additional years beyond his 10-year statutory term, set to expire September 4 of this year:
“Director Mueller is a true patriot who has served his country with vision and leadership during an extremely difficult period in the nation’s history. For the past ten years, he has worked relentlessly to transform the FBI from a crime fighting agency into one driven by intelligence to counter the greatest threat the nation now faces: violent Islamist extremism. Given the Director’s extraordinary record of accomplishment and the times in which we live, I believe a change in the law is appropriate, in this case. I fully support the President’s decision to ask the Director to serve two more years to see through the FBI’s transformation as the terrorist threat continues to evolve.”
