Tester’s Aviation Security Bill Lands Safely on President’s Desk
Senator’s bill expands Aviation Security Advisory Committee
(U.S. Senate) – Senator Jon Tester’s bipartisan bill to improve aviation security flew through both chambers of Congress and is landing safely on the President’s desk.
Tester’s bill improves airport security by expanding the Aviation Security Advisory Committee (ASAC), which the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) relies on to develop and implement aviation security measures. The ASAC, which the bill makes permanent, will include more representatives from airlines, plane manufacturers, pilots, privacy rights groups and labor.
“The best way to make air travel more secure is by making sure more folks who work in aviation have a say in policies that affect them,” Tester said. “This bill will make our airports safer while making sure that passengers’ privacy is protected.”
Tester’s bill also directs ASAC to open meetings to the public.
Tester has long been in favor of making TSA more effective while protecting the privacy of law-abiding Americans. He previously called out the TSA for abusing its power when confronting a four-year-old girl going through airport security with her family.
