SENATORS THOMPSON AND COCHRAN TO HOLD HEARING ON FINANCIAL OUTLOOK OF THE POSTAL SERVICE

WASHINGTON – Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Fred Thompson (R-TN) and Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS) announced that a joint hearing will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2001 regarding the financial outlook of the United States Postal Service (USPS).

The wide fluctuation in financial estimates made by USPS recently prompted members of the Governmental Affairs Committee to request an independent assessment of the Service by the General Accounting Office (GAO). Chairman Thompson, Ranking Member Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), Subcommittee on International Security, Proliferation, and Federal Services Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS), and Subcommittee Ranking Member Daniel Akaka (D-HI) requested the GAO report, and the findings will be presented tomorrow by GAO Comptroller General David Walker.
