WASHINGTON — U.S. senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Steve Daines (R-Mont.) and James Lankford (R-Okla.) released the following statement on Thursday about the Trump administration’s announcement that the United States will withdraw from the Universal Postal Union (UPU):
“Since 2016 our committee has been investigating the Universal Postal Union’s effect on the cost and security of international mail delivered by the United States Postal Service. While progress has been made over the last several years, we support the president in advocating for an international postal system that is fair for the Postal Service and for American businesses and consumers. We will continue to work with the State Department, the Postal Service, and the Postal Regulatory Commission to ensure that this change does not compromise security and improves postal operations.”
In August, senators Johnson, Daines and Lankford released a statement supporting the Trump administration’s directive to negotiate for reforms to the Universal Postal Union.
