The Senators’ call comes as hurricane and wildfire seasons threaten millions of lives and communities
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ranking Member Gary Peters (D-MI) and Senator Andy Kim (D-N.J.) released the following statement on June 6, 2025, calling on President Trump to nominate a qualified and experienced FEMA Administrator for the Senate to consider:
“At a time when we are seeing increasingly severe weather across the country, we are calling on President Trump to nominate a qualified and experienced FEMA Administrator to lead our nation’s emergency and disaster response efforts. Last year, we saw 27 weather and climate disasters totaling more than $1 billion in damages each, making it one of the most severe and costly years on record. With above average forecasts for both the 2025 hurricane and wildfire seasons, we can expect to have another year of frequent, deadly, and damaging storms and disasters.
“We need an experienced and Senate confirmed FEMA Administrator who is prepared to lead the agency through its many emergency management responsibilities, including coordination, communication, and resource allocation. We urge President Trump to swiftly nominate a qualified individual for the Senate to consider, so that we can ensure our nation’s lead emergency and disaster response agency is prepared to provide communities with the support they need. Until that happens, millions of lives and the safety of communities across the country face an unnecessary risk.”
Senator Peters serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and Senator Kim serves as the Ranking Member of the subcommittee on Disaster Management, D.C., and Census.
