WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, highlighted the Ready to Govern Initiative by the Partnership for Public Service, a program to help assist the 2016 presidential candidates in navigating the transition process.
Sen. Carper: “One of the great virtues of our nation is the peaceful transition of power from one president to the next, regardless of political affiliation. When a new president takes the oath of office, the new administration must be as prepared as possible to hit the ground running from day one. The challenges facing our nation, both at home and abroad, are too great to allow for anything but an orderly transition from one administration to the next. The Ready to Govern initiative from the Partnership for Public Service helps lay the groundwork for a successful transition after the 2016 election, and will hopefully serve as a model for future transitions. Preparing presidential candidates for a smooth transition to the executive office should be a shared responsibility of the outgoing and incoming administrations, career senior officials across the government, and Congress. To that end, I intend to carry-on the effort spearheaded by my former colleague Senator Ted Kaufman and introduce legislation in the coming weeks to make some common-sense improvements to the Presidential Transition Act so that roles and responsibilities for a well-organized transition are clear.”
