Peters Statement on the Trump Administration’s Decision to Print 2020 Census Questionnaires without Citizenship Question

WASHINGTON, DCU.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement after the Trump Administration dropped its effort to include a citizenship question on the 2020 Census:

“I am pleased the Census Bureau will begin printing questionnaires and materials on schedule. This clears the way for the Bureau to focus on getting an accurate count, conduct community outreach to promote full participation, and execute all its operations in a way that uses taxpayer dollars responsibly. Communities in Michigan and across the country rely on an accurate census to determine everything from Congressional representation to federal funding, and we must continue working to ensure everyone is counted in the 2020 Census.”

Senator Peters has long opposed the Administration’s efforts to include a citizenship question on the Decennial Census and remains committed to ensuring a thorough, accurate and cost-effective census count. Earlier this year, Senator Peters cosponsored legislation requiring any proposed changes to the count be properly studied, researched and tested by the Census Bureau.
