Peters Statement on Senate Passage of Bipartisan Resolution Terminating Emergency Declaration

WASHINGTON, DCU.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement after the Senate passed a bipartisan resolution to overturn President Trump’s national emergency declaration:

“Members of both parties agree that securing our Northern and Southern borders is a critical priority, and that’s why Congress passed bipartisan legislation last month that made multi-billion dollar investments in the technology, personnel and resources to help border security professionals protect our country. These tools will help ensure that border officials can fight illegal drug trafficking and support the lawful international trade and travel that drives our economy most effectively while using taxpayer dollars responsibly.

“The President’s decision to bypass the will of Congress is a troubling example of executive overreach that could set a dangerous precedent for future administrations. Today’s bipartisan vote sends a message to President Trump that Congress will not stand by while he undermines our Constitution’s checks and balances by diverting funds from vital military projects to fulfill a campaign promise that does little to make communities in Michigan and across the country safer.”
