Peters Meets with Canadian Ambassador to the United States to Discuss Safely Expanding Travel at Northern Border

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement after virtually meeting with Canadian Ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman:

“I was pleased to meet with Ambassador Hillman to talk about the challenges Michigan’s cross-border communities and binational families continue to face because of ongoing travel restrictions at our Northern Border that disrupt their daily lives.

“With vaccination rates across Canada steadily increasing, Ambassador Hillman and I discussed how our nations can work together to chart a path forward to expand safe and accessible travel at the Northern Border for Michigan’s families and workers. We agreed that while plans to reopen the U.S-Canada border must be implemented quickly and efficiently, it must also be done safely and with the guidance of public health experts. As Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, I’ll continue working to ensure our Northern Border remains secure and accessible for safe trade and travel.”
