Peters & Colleagues Urge DHS to Release Document on Foreign Influence Campaign to Undermine U.S. Elections

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, along with U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR), Mark Warner (D-VA), Vice Chair of the Intelligence Committee, Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ranking Member of the Rules Committee, and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called on Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf to release a document from the Department of Homeland Security regarding a foreign influence campaign designed to undermine faith in U.S. elections.

“We write to urge you to immediately release to the public a September 3, 2020, analysis produced by the Department’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis. This document demonstrates that a foreign actor is attempting to undermine faith in the US electoral system, particularly vote-by-mail systems, in a manner that is consistent with the rhetoric being used by President Trump, Attorney General Barr, and others,” wrote the Senators.

“The document has been marked ‘Unclassified/For Official Use Only,’ meaning that its release would not pose a risk to sources and methods and that it has already been widely distributed around the country through unclassified channels. It is now critical and urgent that the American people have access to this document so that they can understand the context of Trump’s statements and actions,” the Senators continued.

A PDF of the letter is available here.
