Chairman Carper Welcomes President Obama’s Second Term Management Initiative

WASHINGTON – Today, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement welcoming the launch of President Obama’s second term Management Initiative. For more information on the President’s initiative, please click here.

“Strong management is critical to ensuring an effective, efficient, and innovative government. From improving ways to measure the performance of government agencies and programs, to increasing public transparency on how our tax dollars are spent, to rooting out waste, fraud and abuse in government programs, strong management can save billions and make our government work better. Today’s announcement by the President is an important part of that ongoing effort and our Committee looks forward to working with the Administration, especially the Office of Management and Budget, to help move this initiative forward.

“That being said, an essential component of good management is good leadership. Leadership is an important and often undervalued asset that can determine whether or not an organization of any size or scale can effectively accomplish its mission. The Office of Management and Budget is lucky to have a skilled leader in Sylvia Mathews Burwell, who recently took the helm at this critical agency. I am confident that she is the right person to lead the President’s initiative, but she cannot do it alone. That’s why I hope that in short order the President will submit a nomination for the position of Deputy Director for Management of the Office of Management and Budget to help oversee the implementation of this initiative and the Administration’s overall management goals.”
