WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released a statement following reports of a computer breach of the federal contractor, U.S. Investigations Services, Inc. (USIS):
“This latest report of a cyber attack on the major government contractor USIS is deeply troubling and underscores the scary reality of how much of a target our sensitive information has become in cyberspace. It also shows how urgent it is that we reform our laws to better combat attacks from malicious actors. While the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Personnel Management, and other agencies have a number of tools and resources under existing authorities, it is critical that we modernize our outdated federal network security laws to prevent further attacks from happening. The Federal Information Security Modernization Act of 2014, a bipartisan bill that I co-sponsored alongside Sen. Coburn, was recently passed out of committee and would take the critical steps necessary to modernize our antiquated, inadequate federal cyber policies. This legislation will enhance federal agencies’ ability to fend off 21st century threats – and as we were reminded today, we cannot afford more delay on this issue.”
