Chairman Carper Statement on Healthcare.gov Cyber Breach

WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released a statement following reports of a cyber breach on the Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthcare.gov website:

“This report of a cyber breach on the HealthCare.gov test server is deeply troubling and underscores the scary reality of how much of a target our sensitive information has become in cyberspace. Unfortunately, nearly every day, we hear about cyber criminals and foreign nations launching similar attacks.  These incidents not only threaten our privacy and sensitive information, but they also represent a serious threat to our security and our country’s economy and global competiveness. Healthcare.gov is an important portal that provides millions of Americans with access to affordable, quality healthcare. We need to make sure this website, and all other government systems, are adequately protected and not vulnerable to attacks. It is critical that Congress work with the Administration and stakeholders to reform our laws to better combat attacks from malicious actors and comprehensively address our serious cyber challenges to protect our nation, its people, its critical infrastructure, and its economy. We can’t afford more delay on this issue.”
