In Absence of Transparency from the Trump Administration and Action from Congressional Republicans, Committee Democrats Assert Oversight Authority
WASHINGTON, DC—The Democratic members of the Homeland Security and Governmental Security Committee and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are pressing the Justice Department to fulfill President Trump’s promise to provide transparency to the American people by releasing documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, the senators assert their oversight authority to compel the Justice Department to produce all documents, files and other materials in the department’s possession and to ensure the production protects information related to victims. The letter was signed by Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gary Peters (D-MI), and committee members Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), John Fetterman (D-PA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), as well as U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
The members cite their authority under 5 U.S.C §2954 requiring any executive agency to submit requested information to the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee that falls within the Committee’s oversight jurisdiction of the federal government.
