This hearing focused on a number of issues identified in a U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) review of the Federal veterinarian workforce (GAO-09-178). At the request of the Subcommittee, GAO examined the Federal government’s efforts in assessing the sufficiency of this workforce for routine program activities and catastrophic events, including pandemic outbreaks, as well as the workforce challenges Federal and State agencies encountered during four recent zoonotic outbreaks.
