After Administration Finally Terminates DHS Disinformation Governance Board, Portman Calls for Answers

Mayorkas Will Testify at Annual Threats Hearing This Fall

CINCINNATI, OH - Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, issued the following statement after the administration finally acquiesced to his calls to terminate the Disinformation Governance Board at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS):

“The administration is finally acquiescing to our repeated calls to terminate the Disinformation Governance Board at the Department of Homeland Security. I remain concerned by the idea that the United States government would turn the tools that we have used to assist our allies counter foreign adversaries onto the American people. The American public still deserves transparency and honest answers to important questions about the true nature and purpose of the Disinformation Governance Board as well as assurances that DHS will not infringe on the rights of hard-working Americans. Secretary Mayorkas has still not provided them—to the public or this Committee. I will press Secretary Mayorkas for answers at the annual threats hearing this fall and insist that all records related to the Board be provided to the Committee prior to the hearing.”

NOTE: Portman has consistently expressed his deep concerns with the administration’s decision to create a Disinformation Governance Board at DHS. In May, Portman led HSGAC Republicans in a letter to Chairman Peters requesting a hearing with Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas regarding his misleading testimony before the Committee on May 4 on the Disinformation Governance Board. In April, Portman also joined his colleagues in a letter to the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security expressing opposition to the Disinformation Governance Board and urging that any funding for such board be prohibited in the FY 2023 appropriations bill.
